STRANGE FRUIT: BROADWAY MUSICAL
Strange Fruit: The Musical is a vibrant, adventurous Broadway musical adapted from the film Strange Fruit: The Hip Hopera. Through gritty hip-hop music, dance and rap, we travel back in time with LaShelle Robinson on the Underground Railroad, where she goes undercover as a slave to rescue her doomed ancestor Inka from a violent lynching.
Following in the footsteps of Tony award-winning hip-hop musical, The Heights, Strange Fruit: The Musical uses hip-hop to tell a unique story not often told through such means. Like Oprah’s celebrated musical The Color Purple, Strange Fruit also introduces us to a multi-generational family whom we come to love.
Watch as LaShelle dances across the stage in her white wedding dress desperate to marry the love of her life, Todd. Watch as she toils in the cotton fields of an antebellum south plantation to rescue Inka. Watch as she discovers her roots and true identity through incredible courage, struggle and triumph against insurmountable odds. Strange Fruit: The Musical is a Broadway musical that asks the deeper questions of our race-torn American society, ultimately promoting racial reconciliation and forgiveness. Originally, the show premiered as an award winning play at Stanford University. (Read More)
